What Is CI Professional Training?
The Compassionate Inquiry® Professional Training is a year-long, online educational program developed by Dr. Gabor Maté and Sat Dharam Kaur ND.
Designed for helping professionals, it equips you to bring a trauma-informed, compassion-centered approach into your work—whether you’re a therapist, coach, physician, psychologist, social worker, educator, or another professional in a caregiving role.
In this program, you’ll learn how to:
- Recognize and explore unconscious patterns and early adaptations that shape behavior and relationships.
- Create attuned, compassionate conditions grounded in safety and presence.
- Use presence, curiosity, and reflective listening to support those you work with in contacting what is true for them.
- Integrate somatic awareness and regulation practices appropriately within your scope of practice.

Meet the Program Directors
Dr. Gabor Maté
Dr. Gabor Maté is a retired physician, bestselling author, an internationally renowned speaker and the creator of the Compassionate Inquiry approach to psychotherapy.
Gabor evolved this therapeutic approach over 20 years of his personal journey, and from his work with patients in family practice, palliative care, and addiction. He developed his system further while facilitating integration workshops focused on healing trauma through the use of psychedelics.
Sat Dharam Kaur ND
Sat Dharam Kaur ND has supported Dr. Gabor Maté in structuring the Compassionate Inquiry approach and developing the online training.
Sat Dharam is a naturopathic doctor, teacher and author, who combines naturopathic medicine with Compassionate Inquiry, yoga, breathing practices and meditation to support others in healing and integrating mind, body and spirit.
Course Content & Structure
The Professional Training unfolds across eight thematic modules, each revisited three times over the year to support deeper learning and integration.
You’ll explore key areas such as presence and attunement, patterns of behavior and relationship, family dynamics, personal stories, and compassionate awareness—progressing from self-inquiry to skill-building to mastery.
Course Format
Throughout the year you’ll receive:
- Teachings: Recorded lessons with Dr. Gabor Maté and Sat Dharam Kaur ND.
- Practice: Weekly small-group meetings, triads, and live supervision sessions.
- Tools: The Compassionate Inquiry® Map, Feelings vs. Perceptions chart, Essential Qualities, Skills, and Stepping Stones.
- Community: A supportive, global circle of learners and practitioners.
Weekly Commitment (what it involves)
The Professional Training requires a meaningful time investment:
- Bi-weekly small-group meeting (2 hours every two weeks)
- Weekly peer practice (triads), aiming for 50+ sessions across the year
- Module learning (readings, videos) + 2 quizzes per module
- 25 case studies minimum (≥13 with clients outside the training)
- Monthly workshops/masterclasses (live or recordings)
