What is Compassionate Inquiry?

Compassionate Inquiry is an approach that has evolved over 20 years of Dr. Gabor Mate's personal journey, and his work with patients in family practice, palliative care and addiction. He developed his system further while facilitating integration workshops focused on healing trauma through the use of psychedelics.

Compassionate Inquiry gently uncovers and releases the layers of childhood trauma, constriction and suppressed emotion embedded in the body, that are at the root of illness and addiction.

We all long to be seen, heard, understood and loved. We heal when we feel safe in relationship, connected to our bodies, our breath, the present moment, and one another. Only when we experience connection to ourselves and others, can we open up to our vulnerability and emotions, and discover and express what is true for us. This expression is what heals us.

The Event

In this live 4-day online event of total 22-hours, Dr. Maté will model the process of Compassionate Inquiry with course participants to access deep healing and transformation. This will be an experiential workshop where participants will be guided through their own personal process, and will be deeply affected by witnessing the healing process in others.

At intervals each day, Sat Dharam Kaur will lead breathing exercises, meditation practices and yoga to connect to your emotions, to the breath, enhance awareness of the body, and help participants access states of inner peace, calm and stillness. At the end of each daily session, participants will be invited to process what has arisen for them in smaller facilitated breakout groups with experienced Compassionate Inquiry Practitioners.

You Will Learn

  • How childhood trauma is related to illness and addiction
  • How to cultivate presence, being with what is
  • To develop the capacity to witness one’s thoughts and emotions, without identifying with them
  • To bring attention to body signals and emotional states in clients and yourself
  • To enhance your perception of what is not being revealed overtly
  • How to create and maintain a safe sacred therapeutic space
  • How to facilitate the expression of what has remained unexpressed
  • To cultivate patience, respect and choice in the therapeutic process
  • How to uncover early traumatic events of childhood and unconscious feeling states
    through Compassionate Inquiry
  • To decode the unconscious beliefs that contribute to personal suffering in self and others
  • To develop self-compassion and acceptance of all parts of the personality
  • To use meditation, breathing practices and yoga to generate calm and stability

The purpose of Compassionate Inquiry is to drill down to the core stories people tell themselves – to get them to see what story they are telling themselves unconsciously; what those beliefs are, where they came from; and guide them to the possibility of letting go of those stories, or letting go of the hold those stories have on them …
That’s what Compassionate Inquiry is.”
Dr. Gabor Maté

What others have to say

I am a totally different therapist as a result of taking this program. This program revealed to me my blind spots as a psychotherapist and provided me with the resources to work through those blind spots. Meeting with my group on a weekly basis allowed me to delve into my own childhood trauma and heal things I had never even talked about before. I can now hold space for the most difficult emotions, allowing clients to truly feel their pain, anger, and other emotions. 100% recommend the program for anyone wanting to take their practice to a deeper level.
